Preparing for Baby ~ Part 2

26. July 2010 — jen0r

To any outsider, this furniture piece is just any other changing table.

But to me, it is much more.

This changing table started out a lowly Craiglist Ad for $20. It was white, had chipped paint, and needed some serious sanding on the shelving units. It was Project "Love-At-First-Sight," and boy (or should I say, Girl) do I love a project!

For anyone out there that has purchased baby furniture, changing tables are pretty darn expensive for the size and amount of time that you use them for. I never purchased a furniture piece solely for the purpose of a changing table to use with my previous two. We had a dresser that was apparently a "Combo Unit," but I can tell you it was not fun to change a diaper on it with a wiggly baby. So of course, I see this Craigslist ad and think "I have to have this- no matter what the condition!"

I remember I went to pick up this item my myself, in San Clemente... on a day I thankfully had no children with me. It's a good thing because I wound up having to take both of the car seats out of the back to fold down the seats and drive home with them on the front passenger seat! This changing table seemed HUGE when I purchased it, and when I saw it in person it wasn't in as good of condition as I imagined.

And then I came home with the Changing Table, and had my husband tell me that I'd never get it done.

But I lovingly sanded this baby down after I took the entire changing table apart, and even got sanded paint dust all over both of our cars (much to my husband's dismay). Once everything was sanded it was go-time for paint, with the cars parked out on the street of course.

All of our furniture is an Espresso Color in our home. I kind of like it that way, and decided to stick with the same theme with the changing table. Off to Home Depot I went to purchase Rust-Oleum Satin Finish Spray Paint in color (you guessed it...) Espresso. When all was said and done, this Changing Table took 4 cans of spray paint to adequately cover it and give it a nice finish. Overall cost of refinishing was about $20 (including sand paper), which to me is a bargain considering how expensive a brand new Changing Table is!

My husband thought I was crazy for taking on this project. Heck, I got weird looks from some neighbors- and I'm sure they were thinking I had a screw loose for doing this project on my own! But in the end, I'm really happy with the finished product.

And nothing is better than accomplishing something that people thought you could never do.
